The “Balanga Community-Based Ecotourism Zone” program underwent site validation as part of the prestigious Galing Pook Awards on August 12, 2024, at the City’s Audio Visual Room.
Spearheaded by the Local Government of Balanga through the City Agriculture Office, this program underscores the critical role of preserving and protecting the city’s vital wetland areas. These efforts not only safeguard the ecological balance but also enhance the social, economic, and natural structures within the community.
City Mayor Hon. Francis Anthony S. Garcia, Vice-Mayor Vianca Lita Gozon, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, city department heads, the City Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (CFARMC), and other personnel were all in strong support of the program. The event commenced with a dialogue and meeting between Mayor Garcia, city officials, and stakeholders, featuring a concise 10-minute presentation outlining the program’s objectives and achievements.
This was followed by a site visit to Barangay Tortugas and the Balanga City Wetland and Nature Park. During the visit, validators were accompanied by City Agriculturist Ms. Nerissa Mateo, City Environment & Natural Resources Officer Ms. Merliza Acosta, and City Tourism Officer Mr. Norlie Castro. Together, they provided an in-depth tour of the conservation areas, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to protect and sustain these ecosystems.
During the exit conference for the 2024 Galing Pook Awards, former DENR Secretary Ms. Elisea Gozun and Trustee Mr. Kiko Miranda shared their observations from the site visit. They noted the strong local economy, evident in ‘Tienda de Balanga’, as well as the well-maintained environment of the Balanga City Wetland and Nature Park. They also emphasized the importance of collaboration, highlighting that progress is achieved through collective effort—”sama-sama tayong uunlad.” Additionally, the conference reflected on the area’s history of birdwatching, recalling that the first organized bird watching event in Bataan took place right here in Balanga.
In his closing remarks, City Mayor Hon. Francis Anthony Garcia expressed his optimism for the continued success of the program. He emphasized the importance of sustaining the collaborative efforts that have driven Balanga’s environmental and economic progress, noting that the dedication of all involved has positioned the city as a beacon of sustainable development.
