March 15, 2024 – In a resounding display of community spirit and preparedness, the City Government of Balanga through the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection Balanga City Fire Station, hosted the 8th Barangay Fire Olympics, a highlight event held annually in commemoration of Fire Prevention Month alongside International Women’s Month in March.

Held at the Vista Mall Bataan Parking Lot Event Area, the Fire Olympics saw enthusiastic participation from Barangay Councils, Barangay Tanods, Barangay Technical Advisors, constituents, and distinguished guests.

The significance of the occasion was underscored by ABC President Erlinda Ganzon, who emphasized the importance of vigilance in preventing fire incidents. She urged all Balangueños to familiarize themselves with emergency contact numbers and remain alert to avert potential disasters.

The program commenced with a solemn torch-lighting ceremony, symbolizing the commitment to fire safety and disaster preparedness. Engr. Dennis B. Mariano, the Department Head of the Balanga City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), spearheaded the event with the full support of Mr. Arvin Janolo Catipon, Head of the Bataan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

A highlight of the event was the spirited competition, which showcased the prowess and readiness of various barangays in responding to fire emergencies. Led by FCINSP Rene P. Fesetan, City Fire Marshal of the Balanga City Fire Station, the participants engaged in various challenges aimed at honing their firefighting skills.

One of the most engaging segments of the competition was the Muse Competition, where representatives from different barangays demonstrated their advocacy and knowledge of fire safety protocols. The event underscored the importance of community involvement in fire prevention efforts.

Following intense competition and impressive displays of skill, the winners of the 8th Barangay Fire Olympics were announced:

Best Muse: Brgy. Cataning
Best in Bucket Relay: Brgy. Pto. Rivas Lote
Best in Liquid Fire Extinguishment: Pto. Rivas Ibaba
Best in Hose Laying and Replacement of Busted Hose and Up the Ladder Targeting: Brgy. Tortugas

The overall standings were as follows:

2nd Place: Brgy. DFS (Award: ₱10,000 and plaque)
1st Place: Brgy. Tortugas (Award: ₱15,000 and plaque)
Champion: Brgy. Pto. Rivas Ibaba (Award: ₱20,000, plaque, and fire extinguisher)

Consolation prizes were also awarded to other participating barangays, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event and the collective effort towards community resilience.

The 8th Barangay Fire Olympics not only showcased the firefighting skills of Balanga’s barangays but also served as a reminder of the importance of preparedness, vigilance, and community collaboration in mitigating the risks of fire disasters.
