This Component City and the towns of Mariveles and Samal are this year’s regional winners in the most coveted Presidential Award for Child-friendly Municipalities.
Malacanang has been yearly giving the prestigious awards to deserving local government units (LGUs), which promote children’s rights to survival, development, protection, and participation.
Samal won under mayor Gene Malibiran-dela Fuente in the fourth- to sixth-class town category, while Mariveles under Mayor Jesse I. Concepcion won in the first-to-third class town category and Balanga City under Mayor Joet S. Garcia won in the component-city category.
Olongapo City under mayor James Gordon won in the highly urbanized city category.
For the Second time around, Mariveles was last year’s national winner in its category while Olongapo City was also a finalist.
All the 18 barangays of Mariveles have functional Barangay Councils for the Protection of Children (BCPC) and Mayor Concepcion had set aside an amount for the said purpose in his bid to protect further the children.
All these local government units (LGUs) will compete in the national search. The national winners will receive Presidential trophies and P500,000.
The search for the Most Child-Friendly Barangay was launched by Malacañang and is annually held to determine the implementation of child welfare programs in the barangays.
Day-care centers in Balanga City are air-conditioned and equipped with flat screen televisions; the teachers have their own laptops given by Mayor Garcia, son of Gov. Tet Garcia and younger brother of Rep. Abet S. Garcia.
The city has 28 daycare centers, all are continuously implementing the Educhild Program that promotes responsible parenthood and child rearing. The program launched three years ago is under the City Social Welfare and Development Office.
